The original two piece mainsprings have broken in places and the leather piston washer is in lumps in the chamber, with a mashed retaining screw, but other than that, with those bits replaced and a relube it will hopefully be as good as new. Though it is a pitted brown colour all over, the original screws and bolts have all come undone with a little heat and persuasion, bar the rear sight which I haven't had the courage to attempt yet. These precision-made guns were so successful that BSA moved into the modestly priced, good quality sporting arms market. The stock and loading tap are in especially good order, suggesting it hadn't had much use. In 1904 it received a contract to supply 1,000 Lincoln Jeffries model H air rifles to the Lincoln Jeffries Company. 177 one I bought recently, it looked like it had been sitting in a shed for at least 50 years, but fortunately it had no signs of damage or bodgery, though lots of ancient black dust, brown surface rust and myriad insects.
